i recently ordered pit bulls for dummies, and will soon acquire a copy of dog training for dummies.

the lady that lives downstairs from me gave me a book titled 'Smarter than you Think' and it tells you to throw things at your dog to teach it to come, and to stick a match in its butt to poop, and not trust dog food companies, and all this weird stuff, not too sure about that book.

any other suggestions? or tips?

Answer
When I had just got my APBT I went to my local library's site and in the keyword box i put Pit Bull and it came up with alot of good books that were really useful so try looking up your library. They have alot of info on APBTs. Good luck

What are the pros and cons of crate training for puppy dogs?

nyuxbrain

I have a 9-week old mini pinscher. I live in a relatively spacious Manhattan apartment.

Answer
Not a whole lot of cons. Some dogs are not properly introduced to the crate, so they may have a bad experience and become fearful of the crate - they may bark or injure themselves trying to get out.

Pros:
it's humane
it's safe (for both your dog and your house)
it's a lot easier when you travel with your dog
it's a lot easier when you leave your dog at a boarding kennel
it speeds up house training
it gives your dog a safe secure place to call its own
it's very helpful when you have people over to visit or workmen in and out for any reason.

ETA: The biggest con I've found is my one dog knows it's his safety zone. When he sees me bring out the bottle of ear cleaner he dives into his crate. He knows I won't go in after him. So I have to remember to close and lock his crate before I get out the ear cleaner.

Who is considered to be the best dog/puppy training facility?

Our 8mo old puppy seems to have a very short attention span. We take her out on a leash to "potty" and if there is anything or anybody else around, she is distracted and does nothing. It can be a bird, a car, a person, or just sniffing in the wind. She has learned to obey the "sit" and "shake" (offers a paw) commands. Has not learned "down" or "stay". We think she is "ADHD". Any suggestions?

Answer
Puppies like babies have short attention span. But you are wise to consider obedience training. Look for trainer who is an animal behaviorist and you should be fine no matter who you choose. Call your local vet office to see if they can recommend one. I would stay away from PetSmart. I've seen the way they train and it is not the best.

I got both my dogs trained when they were puppies. I brought them every Saturday for an hour and it was great. I learned a lot. And depending on what kind of dog you have, you may really really need the training. I have 2 miniature schnauzers, which are smart stubborn dogs.

What or who has the best puppy-dog training books or video?

Q. I'm trying to teach or train a husky- german shepard mix pup2mos, old. I know that's young, but I figure if I start trying now on simple things that it is better than waiting or putting it off until he won't understand any commands. His mom, german shepard, was so easy to teach everything, but his dad, husky, oooh my gosh.He was so hyper, he would'nt be still to listen to anything.

A. When my dog was a puppy the puppy trainer recommended a book by the Monks of New Skeet. They are known for having well trained dogs. Good luck.

What is the best age to take a puppy to dog training courses?
Q. I have a wire haired daschund and we will be taking it to dog training courses. What age is best for us to start taking it to courses?

A. Well, for me daschunds are the best choice of breed, so well done on that. I also think - judging by everyones answers - that you should start as early as possible. Daschunds really deserve a nice name like Koko. Whatever the name is, make sure it's not something like Dahpne. I would also recommend a dog training service such as "Lead The Dog". Just look at www.LeadtheDog.co.uk for more information. Have a nice day!

At what age should I start taking my border Collie puppy to dog training?
Q.

A. As soon as he's old enough. First step is puppy manners class. After that, obedience. From there, you decide what types of things you want to do. Obedience, agility, flyball, herding, tricks, etc.

Groundwork training should be done from the second he's able to move around. A proper breeder would have been laying groundwork and you would have experience to continue it until he can get to puppy classes. If you don't have experience with what you should be teaching a puppy or a dog, then this is not the breed of dog for you.

Is professional puppy/dog training worth it at like Petsmart?

Q. Also, what's the best age of the puppy to take them to a professional trainer?

I'm talking about puppy training in a class with other dogs and their owners of course.

A. Professional training is a must! The more resources you have to help teach your dog how to behave in the human world, the more successful your relationship with your dog will be. So many dogs are discarded due to simple problems that could be fixed with basic training.

I would choose a trainer first, and a location second. You can go to the best facility, but if you get stuck with a lousy trainer you will set yourself, and your dog, up for failure. Places like Petsmart do hire good trainers, and more formal schools do hire bad ones.

The best time to start a class is 11-12 weeks. Puppies go through a fear stage around 9 weeks old and are usually out of it by 11 weeks. During this stage, puppies are more unsure of the world, and even minor bad experiences can result in a lifetime of problems. After 11 weeks, puppies are more equipped to handle the unknown, and are ready for school.

I would visit a location or two that is affordable and close to home. Then talk to all the trainers who work there and choose the one you like best.

What age to take a puppy/dog for obedience training?
Q. I have a Great Dane puppy. Of course I want the best training possible for her. Especially since she will become a huge size. The local Petsmart has a great reputable program and I was wondering at what age I should begin this?

A. Puppy kindergarten classes are now taking puppies after they've had their 2nd shots. Puppies at this age learn very quickly and this is the vital age where they need socializing.

I've taken my older Belgian at 3 months and my current Belgian shepherd puppy who's now 3 months just started classes. (Not Petsmart classes!)
