i try so hard to give my cat a bath she wont let me help!!!most pet spa in my area don't groom cats..?

Q.

A. put her on the leash for cats(helps me every time).

Can petting a cat help groom it?
Q. So I have a super fluffy cat in my house. She's part persian. She sheds so much. She hasn't been lately since it's been cool, but we live in the south. It's already starting to warm up a little!

Anyway, that's beside the point. When I go to pet her, she really gets into it. She's so cute. She'll move her head around all over my hand. She really does all the work for me. I don't have to move at all. Sometimes, I drop my arm to the floor, and she just rubs it for minutes at a time. I actually like the feel of her fur, so I get enjoyment out of it too.

Could this help groom her? We have a brush that we use in the summer so that her fur doesn't clump together, but I was wondering if her rubbing against me could act as a natural grooming solution as well as me sometimes gently scratching her behind the ears and stuff.

Thanks!
I did refer to my cat as "she". The question was supposed to be gender ambiguous to cover all cats (male and female). I'm not asking this for myself. I'm just using my cat as an example.

A. Ok, I was reading some of these answers to your question here. LOLOLOLOL. LMFAO. not at you, but at most of these answers. The reason she is rubbing on you, regardless if it's your legs your hand, the reason she's rubbing on you is because she's leaving her scent on you, it also feels good to her too. But I have a problem with the way you asked your question. You referred your cat as an it. A cat is a living creature, don't say it say he or she. Thanks. But I hope I answered your question for you?

Is it natural for cats to groom themselves a lot randomly (not just eaten, slept, too hot/cold or been petted?
Q. I'm curious what stimulates grooming behavior besides after rest or around meal times. If they're not doing it as temperature control it's probably nothing to worry about -- just random touch ups are probably to remove dirt, debris or skin flakes ?

Because being touched messes up the fur and puts a foreign scent the cat will try to get rid of quickly. But they don't always lick the area that was rubbed. Another reason in winter is conserving heat as licking the fur smooths it down and traps air near the skin to insulate against cold. So although the house thermostat is set between 75-80, extra grooming could be a sign my very short hair, thin fur kitty is chilly ?

A. I have written some material on cat behavior, training, and solutions. Feel free to go to the following site; it will help you understand why cats behave the way they do.

Hope this helps.

Where is a good website to get Friskies cat food coupons?
Q.

A. You probably will not find coupons for Friskies directly but what I do is go through ShopGreenBackStreet.com and make purchases at Petco and Petfooddirect. They will normally have coupons for these stores, like right now $5 off any order at Petfooddirect, and I get cash back on every purchase. So I purchase my cat food that way and even when there is not a current coupon I always get cash back on my purchases.

Does anyone know any sites where I can find some coupons for cat food, etc?
Q. Especially for Science Diet kitten food

A. Go to the Science Diet website and sign-up. They are offering a coupon on canned food right now. They will send you a coupon on your animals birthdate.

what is the best dog training book to read for an apbt puppy?

Q. i recently ordered pit bulls for dummies, and will soon acquire a copy of dog training for dummies.

the lady that lives downstairs from me gave me a book titled 'Smarter than you Think' and it tells you to throw things at your dog to teach it to come, and to stick a match in its butt to poop, and not trust dog food companies, and all this weird stuff, not too sure about that book.

any other suggestions? or tips?

A. When I had just got my APBT I went to my local library's site and in the keyword box i put Pit Bull and it came up with alot of good books that were really useful so try looking up your library. They have alot of info on APBTs. Good luck

What are the pros and cons of crate training for puppy dogs?
Q. I have a 9-week old mini pinscher. I live in a relatively spacious Manhattan apartment.

A. Not a whole lot of cons. Some dogs are not properly introduced to the crate, so they may have a bad experience and become fearful of the crate - they may bark or injure themselves trying to get out.

Pros:
it's humane
it's safe (for both your dog and your house)
it's a lot easier when you travel with your dog
it's a lot easier when you leave your dog at a boarding kennel
it speeds up house training
it gives your dog a safe secure place to call its own
it's very helpful when you have people over to visit or workmen in and out for any reason.

ETA: The biggest con I've found is my one dog knows it's his safety zone. When he sees me bring out the bottle of ear cleaner he dives into his crate. He knows I won't go in after him. So I have to remember to close and lock his crate before I get out the ear cleaner.

Who is considered to be the best dog/puppy training facility?
Q. Our 8mo old puppy seems to have a very short attention span. We take her out on a leash to "potty" and if there is anything or anybody else around, she is distracted and does nothing. It can be a bird, a car, a person, or just sniffing in the wind. She has learned to obey the "sit" and "shake" (offers a paw) commands. Has not learned "down" or "stay". We think she is "ADHD". Any suggestions?

A. Puppies like babies have short attention span. But you are wise to consider obedience training. Look for trainer who is an animal behaviorist and you should be fine no matter who you choose. Call your local vet office to see if they can recommend one. I would stay away from PetSmart. I've seen the way they train and it is not the best.

I got both my dogs trained when they were puppies. I brought them every Saturday for an hour and it was great. I learned a lot. And depending on what kind of dog you have, you may really really need the training. I have 2 miniature schnauzers, which are smart stubborn dogs.

Pet smart and Cats GROOMING????

Q. Well I brought my cat into Pet Smart yesterday for a bath and nails done. Since I brought him home he has been licking constantly and will hardly eat. He is not being social at all which he is very social normally...What should I do? Please help only nice people please...

A. I actually have two cats of my own and work part time at petco, and i'm thinking two things. Cat's don't like leaving the house at all cause that's their comfort zone, and your cat may just need a few days to get back to feel comfortable and relaxed. Or he may have had a bad reaction to the shampoo or whatever chemicals they used, and it may have caused some sort of irritation or stomach problem (causing the not eating). I would give it a day or two, and if it doesn't stop, you should probably take the poor guy to the vet he may be sick. Good luck, feel free to email me if you have anymore questions-chris(canewyorker@yahoo.com).

What is the best (reasonably priced) pet insurance for a dog?

Q. Would like to know any personal experiences - positive or negative.

Thanks!
Thanks - I know best and resaonably priced can be two seperate things... I'm asking what is the best reasonably priced one?

A. best, and reasonably priced, aren't necessarily the same thing!

I use VPI for my pups...I have found them to be the most comprehensive pet insurance....

great turn around on claims,
great customer service

Good Luck!

Does anybody have pet insurance for their Dog/other animals ?
Q. What did you pay for it ?
Any additional info is appreciated.

A. I have pet insurance for my 3 year old beagle mix. It's about $100 per year. I have the cheaper plan with VPI, and it doesn't cover routine stuff or spaying/neutering. Still, it's really cheap and they do reimburse you for vet expenses related to accidents, illnesses or injuries. My dog ate some chicken wings once and the insurance reimbursed me for the x-rays and stuff. I really like it because I know my dog will always have the care he needs even if I don't have money. I just have it in case of emergencies, which is what it's really good for.

My dog just got hit can i ever get pet insurance?
Q. He had his leg broken pretty bad. Im paying big. I want to know if its to late to get pet insurance for him for the future.

A. Hi Rena

First, a disclaimer: I work for Embrace Pet Insurance in Cleveland, Ohio.

You can get pet insurance for your dog even though he was hit by a car. The pet insurance only covers stuff that hasn't happened yet so unfortunately your broken leg would not be covered, it is a pre-existing condition.

Typically in cases like this treatment related to your dog's broken leg would not be covered for a certain amount of time, usually the first year of a new policy. However if everything resolves satisfactorily then coverage would be re-instated for that broken leg in the second policy term (i.e. when your policy renews).

Not every pet insurance plan does things this way so be sure and check with each company to clarify.

So it is not too late to get him pet insurance for the future but you will have to bear the cost of treating his current broken leg.

I hope this helps,

Alex

How to train your dog to stack when saying which paw to move?

Q. I have a little pug named Minnie and I am wanting to train her to wear when I say one she will move her front right foot and then when I say 2 she will move her left front foot, then when I say 3 she will move her right back foot, then when I say 4 she will move her left back foot. Do you have any suggestions on how to do this? Or any websites?

A. I'm not sure, but i'm guessing it would be something along the lines of teaching "paw" for the front 2, then going on from there. Maybe touching the leg to make it lift, the rewarding with a treat?

How do you train your dog to not be aggressive against other dogs?
Q. I brought my 2months old puppy to the dog park to get her to interact with other dogs and when other small dogs got close to her she just growled and barked at them. Shese a Chihuahua/Terrier mix. I will try to bring her to that same dog park every week so she is actually used to it.
But is there anything else i can do to get her used to it or to 'tame' her to be comfortable with other dogs?

A. A dog park is no place for a puppy that young.

You don't know the health status of the other dogs, your puppy could pick up deadly disease.

Dog parks are HORRIBLE for socialization.

Stay away from park for now and find a good puppy class that makes sure owners keep up with vaccines, health checks, and keep the facility clean.

How do you train your dog to stop jumping on people?
Q. What are some non-violent methods you can use to train a dog to stop jumping on people? My dog is friendly, but he gets very excited when he first sees people, and he jumps up on them. He's a puppy, but he's already a large dog, and I don't want him to jump on people, especially children, because he could knock them down. So far, I push him down and tell him "No," but this hasn't really helped. Does anyone have any suggestions?

A. This is a very simple fix, especially for a larger breed or mix.
You do need to get everyone involved in this fix for a short time.
Any time your dog jumps up on you simply thrust your knee forward into your dogs chest and give the command "OFF". The moment your dog is off you give a quick treat and praise the command with "GOOD OFF" so as to teach your dog.
"NO" is to general and can mean too many things. Be precise at what you want your dog to do.
We are not talking about kicking your dog or harming your dog here, but hearing a little "UMPH" is not a bad thing.
Just be sure to aim for the chest so as to not harm your dog.
You do need to have anyone in your household to do the same thing and even inform friends visiting family, or neighbors to do the same thing so that your dog doesn`t start to believe it`s ok to do it with another party.
After a short time you will be able to just give the command "OFF" with whom ever your dog attempts it with. Just always remember to praise your dog when he or she listens. you don`t always have to give a treat.
Good Luck

How do I train my dog basic skills?
Q. I have an Alaskan Husky, and he's about 7 months old, but I have problems with him about staying put. I don't know how to train him because it seems hard to get him to pay attention. I've ran out of ways, and perhaps there are better techniques... please help!

A. Well, right now he's still a puppy, which means he'll be hyperactive and have a tough time paying attention. Still, if you're consistent, he should start picking up your commands after a while.

I like training by positive reinforcement. This means rewarding him for good behaviour. Be careful with punishment. Never whack your dog, especially with your hand, or he will become afraid of your hands.

It looks like you're training your dog to stay. I trained my dogs by keeping a treat in my hand, commanding the dog to stay and then moving away. Once I called her, she was allowed to come. If she came early, she didn't get the treat. If she waited until I called her, she got a treat.

A. come= Vien(vee-en) or ici (ee-see)
sit = Assis (a-see)
Stay= Reste (rest-e)

What or who has the best puppy-dog training books or video?

Q. I'm trying to teach or train a husky- german shepard mix pup2mos, old. I know that's young, but I figure if I start trying now on simple things that it is better than waiting or putting it off until he won't understand any commands. His mom, german shepard, was so easy to teach everything, but his dad, husky, oooh my gosh.He was so hyper, he would'nt be still to listen to anything.

A. When my dog was a puppy the puppy trainer recommended a book by the Monks of New Skeet. They are known for having well trained dogs. Good luck.

What is the best age to take a puppy to dog training courses?
Q. I have a wire haired daschund and we will be taking it to dog training courses. What age is best for us to start taking it to courses?

A. Well, for me daschunds are the best choice of breed, so well done on that. I also think - judging by everyones answers - that you should start as early as possible. Daschunds really deserve a nice name like Koko. Whatever the name is, make sure it's not something like Dahpne. I would also recommend a dog training service such as "Lead The Dog". Just look at www.LeadtheDog.co.uk for more information. Have a nice day!

At what age should I start taking my border Collie puppy to dog training?
Q.

A. As soon as he's old enough. First step is puppy manners class. After that, obedience. From there, you decide what types of things you want to do. Obedience, agility, flyball, herding, tricks, etc.

Groundwork training should be done from the second he's able to move around. A proper breeder would have been laying groundwork and you would have experience to continue it until he can get to puppy classes. If you don't have experience with what you should be teaching a puppy or a dog, then this is not the breed of dog for you.

How much does Petco's Basic Dog Training Class cost?

Q. We just adopted a 5 month old lab mix from an animal shelter and would like to bring her to training classes. Anyone know for about how much the basic training classes at Petco cost?

(I know they vary store to store, but I'm just looking for approximately how much the classes usually run for.)

A. Mine cost 155 dollars. I live in Massachusetts.

Just a warning, classes at Petco do NOT work. I also took my 6 month old lab mix which I got from a shelter, it's a low budget class, not taken very seriously by staffers. I'm sure they vary but if I were you I'd invest the extra 50-60 dollars in getting a reputable trainer at a reputable business. I enrolled my dog in puppy classes with a place voted Best of Boston for 5 straight years and what surprised me was the price was 240.00 the class was much more professional, they provided clickers to train with, online videos, handouts, and lots of patience and a much better work space. If I were you I'd research another place first! I hope this helps... good luck and congrats with your new dog!

Does anybody know what are the basic questions one is given for a dog training interview?
Q. It's for PetSmart,I'm going to apply to be a dog trainer so I figured you guys could help. Thanks!

A. I would figure they would ask you about your dog training experience and why you feel you are qualified.

Are there universal hand signals in dog training when it comes to cueing basic obedience commands?
Q. If not universal, what are the most commonly used signals?

A. That's a great question. I think it only matters if you are training the dog for someone else, or with the intention to show them. One of our dogs is trained to voice commands as well as hand signals, but originally the hand signals just kind of 'happened'. We realized that every time we told him to sit, we were holding our hand out with front of us with the palm facing him- and we were curious if he responded to the hand signal or the words. Now he can respond to both, and we made up other hand signals for his other commands.

Why does my cat groom itself after I pet it?

Q. Have a pet formerly stray cat whenever I pet behind its ears, upper back or its forearms as soon as I move away it begins grooming/licking as if I've just soiled it with dirty human germs. Why?

A. There are a couple of theories about this. They're opposing theories: either your cat wants to get rid of your smell, or your cat wants to taste your scent because he's enjoying your company. Either way, it's normal behaviour for a cat. One of mine does it and the other one doesn't. Some cats do it in combination with biting. I've attached a link to an interesting page on it.

Why does my cat groom himself after I pet him while he's sleeping?
Q. I pet my cat while he's sleeping because he's so cute and soft!

He always wakes up and starts grooming himself immediately after, though.

WHY?!

A. Vanity......

My cats hair seems to hurt her when you pet her back, I have tried cleaning and grooming, she is in discomfort
Q. she originally started biting/nibling if you scratched her back, seemed okay but strange, now she actually will turn and bite, I have kids who like petting the cat but are afraid of her. occasionally she has dandriff, but my other cat does not, she is healthy.

A. I have a cat who does not like to be petted on the back. It might just be a personal preference of your cat. Mine will do the same thing. Try to just pet him on the head.

does anyone know of any websites where i can get coupons on cat food in the USA cat food they sell at walmart?

Q. my moms out of work for a month for back problems she messed her back up lifting patients shes a nurse and on short term dissability and we have 4 stray cats we fed regularly along with 2 dogs

A. http://www.thecouponclippers.com/coupons/home.php?bid=1&partner=24houredeals has 99 different coupons when i search for "cat"

The are a clipping service and provide the coupons out of the paper. Many printable coupons are not accepted at grocery stores. Call your stores first before you print them and go. It would be embarasing and make me angry if I counted on coupons that were rejected at the check out isle.

Are there any cat food coupons out there?
Q. I'm looking for Fancy Feast coupons ...or if you know of a store that has this food (cans only) on sale!

It's expensive to take care of a cat ...but we love her! :)

A. Walmart has decent prices on fancy feast in cans, or shoprite.

Why don't they put toys in cereal anymore, or coupons in cat food?
Q. OK, I no longer play with toys, but I sometimes buy kiddee cereals. I noticed rarely do cereals have those little toys in them anymore? I guess with our ultra-careful society today, we're worried about kidlets choking. Somehow in the 80's we played with toys painted with lead paint, ate cereal with toys in the box, and I don't remember any kids ingesting those toys with magnets either. No one made a big deal out of this stuff. Maybe kids today are born dumber because of the pollution in the atmosphere, so extra precautions need to be made. I think it's a sign of economic woes - companies cutting costs wherever they can - no toys in cereal, no cat food coupons in the bag. Sad times.

A. Yea, well i miss those old toys in the cereal boxes. Yea i think that the cereal companies are getting cheeper. Soon we might even be having cereal that only comes from CHINA.... hehe

Is professional puppy/dog training worth it at like Petsmart?

Q. Also, what's the best age of the puppy to take them to a professional trainer?

I'm talking about puppy training in a class with other dogs and their owners of course.

A. Professional training is a must! The more resources you have to help teach your dog how to behave in the human world, the more successful your relationship with your dog will be. So many dogs are discarded due to simple problems that could be fixed with basic training.

I would choose a trainer first, and a location second. You can go to the best facility, but if you get stuck with a lousy trainer you will set yourself, and your dog, up for failure. Places like Petsmart do hire good trainers, and more formal schools do hire bad ones.

The best time to start a class is 11-12 weeks. Puppies go through a fear stage around 9 weeks old and are usually out of it by 11 weeks. During this stage, puppies are more unsure of the world, and even minor bad experiences can result in a lifetime of problems. After 11 weeks, puppies are more equipped to handle the unknown, and are ready for school.

I would visit a location or two that is affordable and close to home. Then talk to all the trainers who work there and choose the one you like best.

Which is the best pet insurance for dog in California?

Q. Hi:
I was wondering which pet insurance is the best and most reliable for my 1 years old mini schnauzer?(I do not want to spend too much, but still need the basic stuff such as vaccine...etc) In addition, I am planning to buy another one, so will there be any discount for 2 dogs in the same plan?
thanks for answer me.

What is the best pet insurance for my dog?
Q. She is a 8 month old Shitzu and we want to get her insurance. We live in San Diego, California
Also, is insurance recommended?

A. I have VPI Pet Insurance, and it is great. I paid $300 for the year (slightly more if you pay monthly), and it has almost paid itself off and I purchased it mid-March.

They have a vaccination reimbursement that goes along with the insurance, so depending on how expensive your vet is, you will get a portion of the cost of all needed vaccinations, as well as spay/nueter procedure, microchip, fecal exam, and flea and heartworm meds.

The only thing that isn't good about it, and I think all pet insurance works this way, you have to pay up front, but you get your reimbursment check within 30 days.
